The SDS Career Explorer was designed in response to the need for a career assessment instrument appropriate for individuals in a junior-high and middle school setting. The Career Explorer provides a self-administered assessment of a student's career interests. The easy-to-understand framework helps students learn about themselves, their educational and career plans, and the working world in general.

The Career Explorer can be administered on its own or as part of a more comprehensive career exploration program. It may be used in individual counseling situations or as a group or classroom activity. This instrument is an interesting and effective way for students to begin thinking about their future and discovering things about themselves that may help with their educational and career planning.

Booklet Sets of 35 for Easier Classroom Use

Using the Self-Assessment booklets, students answer questions about their occupational aspirations or daydreams, then assess their preferences for activities, skills, and careers and estimate their abilities in each of 6 areas based on John Holland's RIASEC theory. The resulting 2-letter Summary Code can be compared to a listing of over 400 jobs in the Careers Booklet. The Exploring Your Future with the SDS booklet provides additional understanding of the RIASEC theory of careers, describes the 6 personality types and explains the use of Summary Codes.

For teachers who plan to use the Career Explorer in the classroom and are not familiar with administration, scoring, and use of the SDS, an informative booklet, the Teacher's Guide, is provided in each package of Self-Assessment Booklets.
